Tortus

Sectional Water Bottle Designed for Hikers

Industrial Design

10 weeks project

Concept Brief.

The objective of this project is to design and develop a hiking water bottle that promotes optimal hydration during hiking activities. The water bottle incorporates a unique dosing mechanism to encourage users to drink water at regular intervals throughout their hike, ensuring they stay adequately hydrated.

Objectives.

  • Design an ergonomic and lightweight water bottle specifically tailored for hikers, considering factors such as portability, durability, and ease of use.

  • Develop a dosing mechanism that provides gentle reminders to the user, encouraging them to drink water regularly during their hike.

  • Create a reliable and leak-proof water bottle design that can withstand the rigors of outdoor activities.

  • Enhance the user experience by incorporating additional features, such as integrated tracking or reminder functionalities, to support hydration management during hikes.

Research Summary.

“I almost always hike with my friends and I need a product that can stand out from the others!”

“I didn't realize how big of an impact a proper hydration can have during the exercise.”

On average a hiker should drink about

of recreational hikers use multi-use water bottles.

Design Opportunity.

In 2019, North America accounted for 63.2% of the market for hiking gear and equipment. This region has derived the largest market for hiking equipment and gear in part due to an increasing number of consumers seeking outdoor recreation to connect with nature and exercise.

A hike is a great way to get fresh air, sunshine, and exercise, making it a healthy and enjoyable activity. Exertion, however, can cause dehydration, which can make hiking less enjoyable and even dangerous.

Product Design.

Tortus is a sectional water bottle, designed for hikers that improves the hydration by helping in dosing and saving the water thorough the hike.

Each section can be filled with 350 ml of water and in order to be opened, the user have to twist the section by 180 degrees. Once the first bottom section is empty, the process is repeated with the three sections left.

The water bottle also features small illustrations that indicate when the user should begin the hydration.

Prototyping Process.

I started my prototyping process from simple Foam Model to get a quick grasp of the form.
Then I moved to the
Scale 3D Printed Model to get more insights about the form and how the function of the mechanism.
Last phase was the
Full Scale 3D Print, where I mastered the tolerances and the dosing mechanism to eventually produce a full working concept.
